Dear friends in Christ,

Do you remember the story of Mary Poppins? Mary Poppins, that wonderful magical nanny, would appear when and where she was needed, but would only stay until she was no longer needed – when “the winds changed”. Through her work with the family, they were able to understand one another better and develop a stronger relationship until this transitional nanny was no longer needed. The winds of the Banks household had changed.

Well friends, the wind has changed! In September, a new pastor will begin at First Presbyterian and I will be en route to New Mexico. I tried to think of words of wisdom to share with you all in the letter, but all I can think of is the ending of the movie where they all go fly kites. And there is the wisdom. When Mary Poppins leaves, things do not go back to the way they had been before, nor does everything fall apart. As a family, the Banks move forward in their new relationship with each other and fly a kite. So go fly a kite! Celebrate, revel in and move forward in the new relationship you will have with Susan. As a family step out into the new future God is calling you to in faith and trust.

It is scary to let go of what we have known, but all the work we have done together has prepared you for this moment. While there is some sadness in saying good-bye, there is also the excitement of a new future.  As I pack up my “carpet bag” to leave, go build your new kite and let it soar. Let yourselves soar into the new adventures that await you. And so I close with words from that final song:

Go fly a kite up to the highest height,

Let’s go fly a kite and send it soaring

Up through the atmosphere, up where the air is clear.

Oh let’s go fly a kite!

May the grace of Jesus Christ,

the love of God,

and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit

be with you now and always,

Peace

Pastor Trish
